According to the Associated Press, Florida has reported 21,683 new cases of COVID-19, the highest one-day total since the start of the pandemic. With these new numbers, Florida is now the national epicenter for the virus, recording around a fifth of all new cases in the United States.
Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has limited local officials' ability to impose restrictions to stop the spread of COVID, resisting mandatory mask mandates and vaccine requirements. DeSantis blames the surge on a seasonal increase stating that more Floridians are seeking shelter from the hot weather. Of course, they did not see a surge last summer with the same high temperatures.
AdventHealth's Central Florida Division has advised that it will not longer be conducting nonemergency surgeries so that they can free up resources for COVID-19 patients.
The Walt Disney Company announced on Friday that they will require all salaried and non-union employees to be vaccinated against COVID 19 in the next 60 days.
